India stated on Tuesday, 27 December 2016, that it will spare no effort to release an Indian Catholic priest abducted in Yemen, who through a video appealed for assistance. Father Uzhunnalil, who hails from Kerala, was abducted in March by Islamic extremists who attacked an old-age home run by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity in southern Yemeni city of Aden. A five minute-six second video of priest Tom George Uzhunnalil has been released where the priest is seen appealing to Pope Francis and the Indian government through a purported video to release him from his captors. “My captors have made many contacts with the Government of India to get me released, and I am very sad that nothing has been done seriously in my regard,” added priest Tom. “We will spare no effort to secure Father Tom's release from captivity," responded the Minister of External Affairs of India, Sushma Swaraj. “I have seen the video from Fr Tom. He is an Indian citizen and the life of every Indian is most precious for us.” Father Joseph Chinnaiyan, deputy secretary of the CBCI, said that it not possible to verify the veracity of the video. The video was released on Youtube and facebook on Monday, but the period when it was shot is known. “If I were a European priest, I would have been taken more seriously. I am from India. I am perhaps not considered as of much value," says the 59-year-old. Yemen has been going through civil war, in which extremist militants for al Qaeda and ISIS are widely spread.
